Getting Your Car Ready for Winter: A Guide for Huddersfield Drivers
Cold mornings, darker evenings and wet roads can make everyday journeys more challenging. Whether you’re commuting around Huddersfield, travelling through Elland or heading onto the M62, preparing your car before winter arrives can help reduce the risk of an inconvenient breakdown.
At SLK Recovery, we provide 24-hour breakdown recovery and jump-start assistance across Huddersfield and West Yorkshire. Here are some practical checks to help you prepare for colder weather.
1. Get Your Battery Checked
A weak battery can become more noticeable when temperatures drop. If your engine has been turning over slowly or you’ve recently needed a jump start, arrange a battery and charging-system check at a garage.
A jump start may get the engine running, but it won’t fix a worn battery or an underlying charging fault. Getting the cause checked can help prevent another non-start when you least expect it.
2. Check Your Tyres
Look over your tyres for uneven wear, cuts, cracks or bulges. Check pressures against your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, including any adjustments needed when carrying passengers or luggage.
If the tread looks low or you’re unsure about the condition of a tyre, ask a tyre specialist to inspect it. Don’t wait until the first icy morning to deal with tyres that need attention.
3. Top Up Winter Screenwash
Road spray and grit can quickly leave your windscreen dirty. Use screenwash suitable for winter temperatures and follow the dilution instructions on the bottle.
Check that the washers spray properly and the wipers clear the glass without smearing. Replace damaged blades and free any frozen wipers before switching them on.
4. Check Coolant and Oil
Check your oil level using the procedure in your vehicle handbook, and use the specified oil if topping up.
Coolant also needs attention because its antifreeze content protects the engine in cold weather. Only check the coolant reservoir when the engine is cold, and use the correct coolant for your vehicle.
If the level keeps dropping, or you’re unsure whether the antifreeze protection is adequate, book a garage check.
5. Make Sure You Can See and Be Seen
Check your headlights, brake lights, indicators and rear lights. Keep lenses clean so dirt doesn’t reduce their effectiveness.
Before driving, clear your windows and mirrors fully and allow the interior glass to demist. Remove snow from the vehicle that could slide onto your windscreen or fall into the path of other road users.
Give yourself enough time in the morning to prepare the car properly.
6. Carry a Small Winter Kit
A few useful items can make an unexpected delay easier to manage:
-
A warm coat, gloves and a blanket.
-
An ice scraper and de-icer.
-
A torch.
-
A charged phone, charging cable and power bank.
-
Drinking water and a few snacks.
-
Sturdy footwear.
Keep these somewhere accessible, particularly before longer journeys.
7. Plan Before You Set Off
Check the weather forecast and travel updates, especially before travelling over higher ground or along the M62.
Allow extra time and carry enough fuel for possible delays. If you drive an electric vehicle, plan charging stops with a comfortable reserve.
In poor conditions, reduce your speed and leave more space behind the vehicle ahead. If severe weather is forecast, consider whether your journey can wait.
